(500) Days of Summer is a cult rom com classic. The film starts with the poetic admonition, 'this is not a love story, it's a story about love.' A truth we all should come to terms with regarding our failed relationships. 'Love story' paints it as something bigger than it is, and possibly inflates its romance in a way that stops us from seeing things bereft of rose colored glasses. 

The 'not a love story' story follows Tom, a hopeless romantic stuck writing Hallmark cards for other couples, and Summer, an anxious-avoidant manic pixie dream girl who just wasn't the one for Tom. And this is basically the whole movie – his grief and pain over falling in love and being forced to fall out of love. Albeit Summer is often portrayed as a b*tch who slings Tom around, while in reality she's just a woman who was upfront and open with Tom from the beginning. He knowingly signed up to fall for a woman who told him she didn't want a relationship. But hey, your opinion is up to you. At least enjoy these cute quirky memes celebrating a breakout (and breakup) indie film of the 2000s.
